How is it to work at a leading provider of DevOps and Agile software solutions? Meet two of Eficode’s employees, Adriaan Knaapen and Julia Aalto, and find out why they enjoy working in the community of almost 600 software professionals.

Senior DevOps Consultant Ardiaan Knapen originally started working at Eficode as a summer worker after moving to Finland to do his master’s degree. While his career started in internal projects, he now works mostly with web and backend development in versatile client cases.

”I decided to stay in Finland and continue working at Eficode as I was able to try all kinds of different things and choose what I wanted to work on every couple of months, rather than just sticking with a fixed plan. The atmosphere felt very encouraging and energizing for a fresh graduate.”

Scrum Master and Agile Coach Julia Aalto, on the other hand, had a ten-year career in ICT before starting to long for something new and then switching to Eficode. Now she coaches different teams and helps them to succeed.

”We work with so many different cases and there are many different people. If you know what you want and what you’re interested in, you can certainly find a chance for that. A great plus is that, as one of the leading companies in the industry, the clients usually already know us and there is always a trust to begin with.”

Adriaan Knapen enjoys his role as a consultant which has enabled him to combine both web and backend development.

Versatile projects bring a freedom of choice

Eficode’s employees get to choose rather freely on which projects they want to work. This provides a possibility to steer one’s work and career toward a meaningful direction.

”We have a wide variety of clients from large electrical manufacturers to small startups with a handful of employees. Some might be embedded hardware developers or small e-commerce companies building their first website. When a new project comes in, you just have to raise your hand and say you are interested in working on it,” Knaapen explains.

”All kinds of clients have their upsides and interesting challenges to work with. For example, a small startup might be more open to change and our way of thinking, whereas a manufacturing company might not be very familiar with using software in the first place.”

In addition, work doesn’t have to be limited to client cases only, but the employees can also use their expertise elsewhere in the company.

”For example, I have gotten the chance to write expert blogs and attend events. It is all about getting to know our people and listening to what could be done. Your role doesn’t have to fit in one box,” Aalto says.

The expertise of the team helps you grow

Eficode is the home for nearly 600 software professionals working with DevOps and Agile across 10 different countries. Eficode HQ in Helsinki together with Tampere office accomodates more than 300 professionals, making Finland Eficode’s biggest site.

Each employee has their own area of expertise, from advisory and coaching, agile software development and maintenance, UX and accessibility to testing and DevOps consulting and tooling, to name some. Cross-functional teams are built for each project so that everyone gets to use their skills and knowledge.

”I feel that I have been learning a lot during my first year as I have met many people who are much more experienced than I am. You learn by coaching the more junior ones and asking the more senior ones how they would do a certain thing – not by copying but applying these learnings in your work step by step,” Aalto says.

As a Scrum Master and Agile Coach, Julia Aalto has been able to help teams solve various client cases. "In the current project, we have two different teams combining their skills in machine learning and software development."

”You don’t have to be a full generalist – you can always message somebody who is an expert in an area you don’t know that much about yourself. Or you can just walk to our kitchen and ask how they would approach a situation you are in at that moment,” Knaapen adds.

The knowledge is also shared between the colleagues on a weekly basis. 

”We have these sessions every Friday. If you’re interested in sharing something you know about, you can always book a session and showcase your knowledge to others. It’s made sure that if you think there is something everybody should know about, there will be a place to share that”, Aalto explains.

The company culture cherises new ideas

Both Knaapen and Aalto find Eficode’s culture equal and open for new ideas from any employee, regardless of their background or level of experience.

”The organization is very flat and most of the initiatives we take are driven by the employees themselves,” Knaapen says.

”For example, one of our coworkers got an idea of a buddy program, and now we have one. I’ve been, for my part, interested in AI and language models, so we established an AI channel to talk and learn about these topics. There is a very straightforward approach to applying new ideas.”

Aalto thinks it all comes down to the welcoming and accepting atmosphere at work.

”It’s easy to get to know people, and you can truly feel you are accepted as you are. There’s nobody saying you can’t do this or you can’t do that. You can truly grow here if you’re willing to do that.”
